Stupid Beliefs # 1 – The Magical/Mystical Hebrew Letters

In the 3rd chapter of Genesis a serpent speaks with Eve in the garden using actual words:

1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ “

4 “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Since Judaism teaches that god spoke the world into existence using the Hebrew letters it is also believed that both Adam and Eve and the serpent all spoke Hebrew as well. In Judaism the Hebrew alphabet is considered powerful and the kabbalah takes full advantage of the magical and mystical attributes found in each letter of the Aleph-Bet. In fact the hidden story behind the tower of Babel is that the Hebrew language was too powerful to allow everyone on earth to speak it as their native language. This is why god caused everyone to speak different languages at that time but in the world to come it is believed that everyone will speak Hebrew once again.

I have discovered that most people outside of the Judaic faiths are not aware of the mystical stories surrounding the Hebrew alphabet so I have decided to share a few of these stories:

-          The second letter of the Hebrew alphabet, Beit, spoke to god concerning the creation of the world. The letter Beit praised god for his greatness and holiness to such a degree that god blessed the letter Beit by creating the world with her name. So in the beginning (Bereishit) god created the heavens and the earth.

-          The first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, Aleph, is silent. The only sound made when speaking the Aleph is the sound of the accents, if any, that have been added to the letter. However, the Aleph may sound silent but she can talk according to Jewish mysticism. When speaking with god the Aleph showed great humbleness and meekness. For displaying these traits god granted the Aleph the responsibility of being the first letter in the alphabet. God said to the Aleph, “I will not be unified except through you.”

-          God made the Lamed, the 12th letter, the tallest letter in the Hebrew alphabet. Why? Because the Lamed is used in learning and since learning, according to Judaic tradition, is about reaching up and grasping something that is beyond where you stand now the Lamed had to be the tallest letter.
