The bible has been added to the curriculum of an Idaho Charter school that receives public funds and students will have to study the bible in order to advance to their next grade. Starting this fall students in the 6th grade will learn Latin and 9th graders will have to study the bible during their Western Civilization courses. While I do not have a problem with students studying the bible from an historical perspective of how Western civilization was shaped I do not believe that the bible should be used in any publicly funded K-12 school. Furthermore, while the charter school promises that the students will not receive religious schooling this will set a precedent that will allow more schools to use the bible in class and inevitably there will be teachers that will take advantage of this opportunity and attempt to force their own theology on their students.
The story was first published in the Idaho Statesman and from the perspective of this news story alone having the bible in class does not seem like such a bad idea. However, if we look at other sites that are promoting this story we can begin to see an entirely different attitude. The Idaho Values Alliance believes that this could be the start of all Idaho public schools using the bible in class. In fact Our Godly American Heritage is attempting to garner enough signatures that would make this a reality. These organizations believe that they can have the bible taught in every school across Idaho within the next five years!
