Deuteronomy Chapter 13 has one common theme throughout the chapter: kill anyone who doesn’t worship the god of Israel. The whole chapter is full of different scenario in which people were to be put to death if they worshipped another god. As you read the rest of this blog please keep in mind the last words of Deuteronomy found in 13:18…You must kill the one who worships another god in order to do what is right in the eyes of the lord your god. So according to the bible, god thinks the following is right to do!
- If a prophet gives a prophecy that comes true but gives the credit to another god then you must kill this prophet. Besides, it was god who allowed the exact words of the wicked prophet to be fulfilled in the first place as a test of gods people (Due. 13:3). God wants to know for sure that you love him and remember, killing the prophet is the right thing to do in the eyes of god.
- Does your brother, son, daughter, spouse, or friend ever try to convince you to worship another god? Well, fear not! It is your duty to put your loved one to death! You are to show no pity on your loved one or try to conceal the fact that they worship another god. They must be killed immediately…but once again do not worry because god loves you so much that he has decreed that you must be the one to strike the first blow against your wicked and evil loved one (Due. 13:9). When the rest of Israel hears about your faith in god and how well you followed his commandments they too will fear god even more (Due. 13:11) and stop performing wicked acts against god. Don’t forget, to murder your loved one is the right thing to do in the eyes of the lord your god!
- If a city in Israel is worshipping another god then it is your duty god warrior to execute everyone and everything in the city. You are to smite every inhabitant of the city human and animal alike. Then you are to gather all the belongings and burn them in the center of the town in order for the lord your god to turn his anger from the rest of Israel. God made a promise to your forefathers that he would multiply you but (Due. 13:17) if you do not burn the city to the ground then god cannot keep that promise because his anger is fierce and void of compassion.
One last quick comment about Deuteronomy chapter 13 concerns verse seven. It says:
13:7 Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth;
The only way that the earth would end is if it was flat. A circle earth would not have ends. Yet god made the mistake of having Moses write this into the bible implying that god thought that the earth was flat. Maybe god suffers from the same anomaly that Phineas Cage suffered from as I cannot imagine how a loving god could condone and praise such barbaric and vile deeds in his name while looking down on a round earth and calling it flat. Someone must be smoking some pretty illegal stuff up there!
